A Course in Miracles by Helen Schucman is a 1976 book written by Helen Schucman, a best-selling author. The basic premise is that the key to “being the master you that you desire to be” is to first “know the will of your Higher Power.” Christ, Schucman claims, told her to this effect when he taught her to channel the power of love through prayer and meditation. From that moment on, Helen Schucman has been guided by this same “will of your Higher Power.” This is the central theme of A Course in Miracles and throughout the chapters, she teaches students the same method of spiritual development and encourages them to use this powerful way of looking at the world around them.
What I find interesting about A course in miracles, other than the subject matter itself (what is the most powerful life lesson?) is that it presents a simplistic yet spiritually valid approach to achieving personal greatness and awakening our Divine potential. Although Schucman does not offer a detailed description of how to obtain the will of your Higher Power, what she does offer is a description of how the process works and how to go about it. Her basic message is that we must learn to discard our thought systems, our ego, and our limited perception of reality in order to see with greater clarity and understanding.
For example, what I would call the “specialness” factor in our lives, between what is “right” and “wrong,” between what is “normal” and “unnormal,” between what is “good” and “bad,” must be eliminated. Our spirit guides and the angels are constantly teaching us about this specialness and it is what separates us from the animal kingdom. It does not matter if you call this specialness anything else, such as extraordinary abilities or talents, powers of intuition, healing powers, etc. What matters are your perception of reality and the fact that you do not allow the things that define you to define you. You do not allow your thoughts to define you.
We live in a world of thought systems and people’s interpretations of these thought systems and, although Schucman herself does not hold to any particular interpretation of the Bible or of religion in general, she does claim that one of the factors that lead to personal greatness is the absence of an incorrect perception. An incorrect perception is one of the primary causes of ego, the need to control and manipulate others, and the need for a belief in something outside of ourselves. If we believe that others are controlling us or steering the path of our lives, we will create more problems for ourselves by trying to direct the course of our lives rather than walking it. If we choose to walk it, we must be sure that we are able to conquer all of the obstacles that may come along the way. The Course in Miracles by Paul and Sarah Schucman does just that.
The course in Miracles teaches how to be free of all of the false beliefs that separate us from who we are as individual beings. It shows how to look within each of us and to see the myriad of emotions, thoughts, and impulses that are contained there. It teaches how to use that awareness to help overcome our fears and to help us grow into new strengths. This book teaches how to discover the power of intuition that lies within each of us. It is not enough to rely solely on the knowledge that can be found in textbooks and on learned professors. The Course in Miracles teaches students how to use the knowledge that they already have inside of them to help them solve problems that others may seem to have been able to solve with little or no effort.
There are many who claim that there is a miracle waiting just for them to claim it. No matter what level of belief that you have in miracles, you will agree that it is more powerful than anything else that you could possibly imagine. Whether you believe in miracles or not, if you have a strong enough perception, you will be able to manifest a miracle that no one has ever claimed before. When you learn how to manifest a miracle through the power of your perception, you can change your life forever.
